The Arri Alexa Mini is a compact and lightweight rental/hire camera, one of the lightest cinema cameras on the market (2.3 kg). Thanks to its cube-shaped design, the Arri Alexa Mini rental/hire camera offers easy handling and multiple camera configurations. It has internal ND filters (0.6, 1.2 and 2.1) and an interchangeable PL mount that connects directly with the new internal sensor mount – also made out of titanium – to ensure a super-stable flange lens support, even when using large lenses. You can also configure the camera with a Canon EF or B4 mount. The Arri Alexa Mini rental/hire camera records up to 200 frames per second with a large dynamic range (14 stops) and the Arri Alexa characteristic look. Workflows with Alexa Mini
  • QuickTime/ProRes
The well-known ALEXA or AMIRA workflow can be adapted 1:1 to ALEXA Mini. When recording QuickTime ProRes files, the camera creates clips in the LogC wide-range color space, and in broadcast clips in the Rec709 color space, that integrates perfectly into the industry's workflows.
The introduction of SUP 4.0 in the ALEXA Mini offers an ARRIRAW recording mode. This allows the ALEXA Mini camera to not only record standard resolutions such as HD, 2K or UHD, but also have Open Gate recording mode that uses the entire sensor area. The recording of ARRIRAW on C-Fast 2.0 cards in the ALEXA Mini, makes including files in a MXF container necessary. The new format is called MXF/ARRIRAW, and it is the same ARRIRAW than the ALEXA cameras you already know have.

Other new recording modes have been included to support specific formats in the Arri Alexa Mini rental/hire camera. For example, the new Anamorphic HD mode, is a ProRes mode that internally decompresses squeezed images by a factor of x2 and scales them to HD 1920x1080 ProRes to compensate the ready-to-deliver HD Ana. There is a matching option on the MXF/ARRIRAW side, the 16:9 HD Ana (OG 3.4K), which is an uncompressed format with a 1920x2160 pixel count.
  • Integrated lens motor control and ND filters, perfect for gimbals and camera movements

The ergonomics of the ALEXA Mini rental/hire camera were created with the new-generation of gimbals, "multicopters" and other specialized equipments in mind. It is compact enough to allow the use of standard PL mount lenses even on lightweight and space-limited rigs, such as gyro-stabilized aerial systems. Its performance in an underwater work is perfect because of its capacity in low-light spaces.

  • Greater efficiency through integrated functions

This rental/hire camera has an integrated lens motor controller that allows new active lens to be connected directly to the PL mount, so focus, iris and zoom settings can be controlled from ARRI hand units, without an additional box. It incorporates a wireless remote control system to use as a normal camera with the ARRI MVF-1 multi viewfinder, or to operate with an on-board monitor controlled via the user button interface. This system allows controlling the camera with Arri accessories or with a computer, tablet or smartphone. Lenses with LDS mount such as Cooke S4/i T2 or Zeiss Master Prime T1.3 offer metadata information to the camera and the WCU. This facilitates handling aperture, depth of field and focus. The active Arri PL mount can also give power to the lenses' servo (e.g. Fujinon Cabrio) without cables.

The motorized and remote-controlled internal ND filters allow fast responses in changing light conditions and help keep clutter around the camera to a minimum.

  • Integrated ARRI Lens Data System (LDS)

ARRI's Lens Data System® (LDS) generates highly accurate lens metadata. When using an LDS lens on a Mini LDS mount, information about iris, zoom position or focus is visible in the viewfinder and the files will have lens data included in the recorded footage. The data also allows lens mapping to pre‑marked focus rings, and reduces time and expense when achieving complex VFX in post.

SUP 4.0 will further expand the versatility and appeal of the ALEXA Mini rental/hire camera, with new features including internal ARRIRAW and Open Gate recording, as well as the 4:3 mode (optimum for anamorphic lenses).

These recording modes are activated by purchasing an ALEXA Mini 4:3 license key in the ARRI license store.
These three new ProRes recording modes access the entire 4:3 sensor area and allow the use of anamorphic lenses. The first mode records the highest possible 4:3 resolution, while the others scale the images on camera for a more efficient workflow.
To monitor all 4:3 modes, the rental/hire camera offers SDI configurations with dual 1.5G or 3G outputs.
  • ProRes 4:3 2.8K for full sensor use (2880x2160) with speeds up to 50fps and a 2x factor.
  • ProRes 2.39:1 2K Anamorphic Allows speeds of up to 120fps.

The active image area is observed in the metadata, so the postproduction tools will crop the images automatically.

  • ECS and Lens data file

The support of the Electronic Control System (ECS) in the ALEXA Mini has been extended to include the Lens Data Archive, allowing the creation and use of custom lens files.

  • Super 16HD recording

By allowing the use of Super16 lenses in the ALEXA Mini rental/hire camera, the new ProRes S16HD recording mode uses a 1600x900 sensor cutout and scales it to fullHD 1920x1080.

  • Improvements in Transvideo StarliteHD5-ARRI

The touchscreen interface of the Transvideo Starlite HD5-ARRI monitor has neutral look and new features, including recording start/stop, access to the three user buttons and playback.


  • Compatibility with the CCP-1 camera control panel

It allows the use of the rental/hire camera without viewfinder and provides full access to the home screen of the user interface and menu, as well as a small monitor image. It can also be used with the MVF-1 by connecting the monitor to the second EVF connector of the CCP-1.

  • Extended SDI metadata:

SDI outputs now take out standard ARRI metadata. There is a Wi-Fi user button to quickly enable and disable Wi-Fi.

In February 2017, ARRI released a new update: Alexa Mini SUP 4.2, maintenance version of SUP 4.0 with several workflow improvements.


This license, enabled by the ALEXA Mini SUP 4.0 update, provides three new ProRes recording modes that access the entire 4:3 sensor area and allows the use of anamorphic lenses. The first mode records the highest possible 4:3 resolution, while the other two squeeze and re-scale images on camera for a more efficient workflow. The monitoring lines for all 4:3 modes offer SDI configurations with dual 1.5G or 3G outputs. ProRes 4:3 2.8K registers the total area of ​​the 4:3 sensor (2880x2160) and can be used with anamorphic or spherical lenses. It goes up to 50fps and has an optional 2x anamorphic de-squeeze for the EVF and SDI monitoring. ProRes 2.39:1 2K Ana: Standard 2K format 2.39:1 (2048x858). It requires no clipping or scaling. Due to the scale inside the camera, the data rate is reduced, allowing recording speeds of up to 120fps. ProRes 16:9 HD Ana: for situations where the appearance of anamorphic lenses is desired, but the final product is HD 16:9 without letter-boxing. Recording speed goes up to 120fps.

The ARRIRAW license key, also enabled by ALEXA Mini SUP 4.0, allows ARRIRAW on C-Fast 2.0 cards in the ALEXA Mini rental/hire camera by recording the files in an MXF container. Like ARRIRAW, the new MXF/ARRIRAW format is decompressed and unencrypted, and contains audio with metadata. ARRIRAW third-party processing tools such as DaVinci Resolve and Baselight should be updated with a new ARRI ARRIRAW Converter SDK, compatible with MXF/ARRIRAW version 3.4, available for free in the ARRI website. MXF/ARRIRAW clips do not require special C-Fast cards, so MXF/ARRIRAW and QuickTime/ProRes clips can be mixed on the same card. MXF/ARRIRAW 16:9 2.8K registers a 2880 x1620 area and supports up to 48fps. Internal recording of MXF/ARRIRAW: the installation of the ALEXA Mini 4:3 license key and the ALEXA Mini ARRIRAW license key in a camera, activates the MXF/ARRIRAW Open Gate 3.4K recording modes enabled by SUP 4.0. MXF/ARRIRAW Open Gate 3.4K has a 3424x2202 resolution and a maximum 30fps. With ProRes 4:3 recording modes, an optional 2x anamorphic deletion is available for monitoring, and a dual 1.5G SDG or 3G configuration is supported. ARRI MINI camera rental/hire in Camaleon Rental. The looks are numbered within nine thematic groups: Black and White, Application, Film, Tinting, Environment, Season, Contrast, Period, Special. In addition to ARRI Look Library, one of the key improvements in ALEXA Mini SUP 5.0 is the ARRI WCU-4 integration, a comfortable and robust 3-axis wireless control unit commonly used with ALEXA Mini rental/hire camera. With these new improvements, the WCU-4 unit will become an even better companion. New camera control functions thanks to the new update.

Wireless transfer of lens files

Previously, lens mapping files had to be manually transferred to the ALEXA Mini rental/hire camera through a USB device.

Now, users can select a lens file stored on the SD card in their WCU-4 using only the handheld unit. You can transfer the file to ALEXA Mini without cables.

Wireless lens file transfer is also useful when you can't touch the camera, for example when mounted on a crane or in a car mount. The Camera assistant can mount the lens and do the rest remotely: from calibration to lens file transfer. ARRI MINI camera rental/hire in Camaleon Rental.

Wireless playback control

Playback control is also possible from the WCU-4. This allows users to wirelessly select, play and transfer any clip of the C-Fast 2.0 card in the ALEXA Mini camera. This feature and the wireless transfer of lens files will be included in future ARRI cameras.

User settings (wireless)

SUP 5.0 extends the user configuration function of ALEXA Mini, which allows all user-defined settings to be stored in a single file.

Partial adjustments are possible using five groups of parameters, allowing specific control. The camera can store different settings with the new update. Most importantly, these user configurations can be accessed and activated wirelessly from the WCU-4, allowing drone operators to change camera settings remotely, like switching from ProRes to ARRIRAW, or activating various aspects of the ARRI Look library in the Arri ALEXA Mini rental/hire camera.


Another new feature in the ALEXA Mini SUP 5.0 is an EXT Sync function that allows synchronizing sensors and parameters in up to 15 additional ALEXA Mini cameras to the ALEXA Mini master camera.

The additional cameras can be set with the master camera parameters (frame rate, shutter angle or NDs), which also provides a status summary of all cameras. Thanks to the new cables and the EDB-2 distribution boxes, EXT Sync simplifies configuration and control of the 3D, VR and VFX in several cameras, so the multi-camera configuration can be operated as if it was just one camera. ARRI MINI camera rental/hire in Camaleon Rental.


The latest ALEXA Mini rental/hire camera software update introduces many other new features.

EF lenses communication with the camera has increased with SUP 5.0. A much wider range of lenses is now compatible for focus, iris control, and image stabilizer. This is interesting for operators who often use EF lenses because of their light weight, they can now work with WCU-4.

The support for ARRI Master Grips has also been extended, with 3-axis control of the ENG lenses and the option to configure Master Grip user buttons. The ability to adjust focus and diaphragm of EF mount lenses with Master Grips opens up a very interesting package solution for documentary operators, who prefer smaller EF lenses due to their weight and cost.

The additional features include 1.3x anamorphic lens support, easier and more stable timecode synchronization, user settings handling, support for WiFi mode, multiple monitoring and visualization improvements and better integration with the System ARRI Electronic Control.


The ALEXA Mini rental/hire camera is a very versatile tool. Some productions use it as a second or third camera, while others use it as a main or single camera during a film shooting. Camera configuration changes a lot, and any time saving during transitions will have a great impact on film shooting timing.

ARRI has 4 new accessories for the ALEXA Mini rental/hire camera. One is the ARRI CBP-1, a base plate with integrated sliding bridge plate and shoulder pad. This allows quick transitions from (for example) TRINITY to MAXIMA, or from Steadicam to a tripod head or shoulder.

The RAB-1 rear accessory bracket offers flexible fastening options for the Power Splitting Box Mk II, a power distribution unit available in gold and V-mount. The SAB-1 side bracket provides an accessory mount in the back of the camera.
