Until recently, no professional cinema camera with a PL mount had included in-body stabilisation. Why?
Technical reasons:
Sensor size: Full Frame sensors are large and heavy, making them difficult to move quickly
PL flange distance: The PL mount has a 52mm flange distance, leaving very little room for IBIS mechanisms
Lens weight: PL cinema lenses weigh several kilograms, creating inertia that complicates stabilisation
Required precision: In cinema, stabilisation must be perfect or not used at all. There is no middle ground.
The Sony Burano has overcome all these technical obstacles. The IBIS system compensates for movement across 5 axes:
Roll (rotation around the optical axis)
X-axis (horizontal shift)
IBIS Modes: PL vs E-Mount
The camera adjusts the behaviour of IBIS depending on the mount in use, optimising stabilisation for each lens system. This is one of the key strengths of professional Sony cameras:
With PL Mount
High: Maximum compensation
- Uses all 5 axes at full capacity
- Ideal for: Handheld with long lenses, subtle camera movements
- Compensation: Up to 5.5 stops (according to Sony)
Low: Moderate compensation
- Reduces the aggressiveness of IBIS
- Ideal for: Wider camera movements, avoiding warping
- Compensation: Approximately 3 stops
Off: No stabilisation
For tripod, dolly, or when using a gimbal
With E-Mount
Active: Maximum stabilisation + digital crop
- Combines IBIS with digital stabilisation (~10% crop)
- Ideal for: Extreme run & gun, sports action
- Compensation: Up to 7 stops (according to Sony)
Standard: Standard 5-axis stabilisation
- IBIS only, no digital crop
- Ideal for: General handheld, documentaries
- Compensation: Up to 5.5 stops
Off: No stabilisation
When to Use and When NOT to Use IBIS
✅ Enable IBIS for:
Handheld without a gimbal: Obviously. That is precisely what it is designed for.
Telephoto lenses: Lenses of 100mm or more amplify any vibration. IBIS is essential.
Subtle camera movements: Small framing adjustments, smooth subject tracking.
Run & gun: When you do not have time for a tripod and need stability immediately.
Moving vehicles: Filming from cars, boats, etc. (though a gimbal would be preferable for very abrupt movements).
❌ Disable IBIS for:
Tripod or dolly: IBIS can introduce micro-movements when the camera is static. Always OFF on a tripod.
Gimbal: IBIS and the gimbal can 'fight' each other, causing erratic movements. Exception: single-handed gimbals with very abrupt motion, where IBIS on Low may help.
Very fast camera movements: Whip pans, crash zooms. IBIS cannot keep pace and may cause warping (image distortion).
Lenses with optical stabilisation (OSS) enabled: There may be a conflict between both systems. Test both options and use whichever performs best.
Long static shots: For maximum sharpness on fixed frames, set IBIS to OFF.

What Is Cine EI and Why Use It?

Cine EI (Cinema Exposure Index) is a working mode that locks the camera to its base ISO (800 or 3200) and allows you to simulate different exposures via an offset that only affects the monitoring LUT, not the actual recording.
Film stock analogy:
Imagine you are shooting on film stock. The film has a fixed sensitivity (say, 500 ASA). You cannot 'change the ISO' once the film is loaded in the camera. Instead, you expose more or less depending on the scene, then adjust during development. Cine EI works the same way: you always record at base ISO (maximum quality), but you can 'preview' how it will look with different exposures using the LUT.
Advantages of Cine EI Mode
Maximum image quality: You always record at base ISO, where the sensor delivers its best performance
Consistent workflow: ISO never changes between takes, making matching in post-production far simpler
On-set flexibility: You can adjust the look without touching the recorded image

Step-by-Step Cine EI Configuration
STEP 1: Activate Cine EI
- Press the MENU button
- Navigate to Shooting Mode
- Select Cine EI (Cine EI Quick is also available for rapid access)
- The camera is now locked to base ISO
STEP 2: Select Base ISO
You have two options:
- ISO 800: For well-lit scenes (outdoor daytime, studios)
- ISO 3200: For low-light conditions (interiors, night, dawn/dusk)
How to decide?
General rule: if you need to open the aperture beyond T2.8 to expose correctly, you should most likely be at ISO 3200.
Practical example:
You are filming an interview indoors with natural window light. You meter the scene and need T2 to expose correctly at ISO 800. Rather than shooting at T2 (shallow depth of field, difficult to keep in focus), you switch to ISO 3200. Now you can shoot at T4, with greater depth of field and improved sharpness throughout.
STEP 3: Enable the MLUT (Monitor LUT)
The MLUT is essential in Cine EI. Without it, you will see raw S-Log3 (flat and desaturated). With the MLUT active, you see how the image will look after grading.
LUTs included in the Burano:
s709: Sony's standard LUT, similar to the look of Kodak 2383 film stock. Natural tones, soft contrast.
709(800): Standard Rec.709, more contrasty than s709. Well suited to broadcast.
Teal & Orange: Modern Hollywood look. Separates cool tones (backgrounds) from warm tones (skin). Hugely popular in advertising and contemporary drama.
Warm: Warm, amber tones. Perfect for romantic scenes, sunsets, and cosy atmospheres.
Cool: Cold, bluish tones. Ideal for night scenes, thrillers, and technological environments.
Vintage: Bleach bypass effect with faded sepia tones. Evokes the aesthetic of films from the 1970s and 80s.
How to activate the MLUT:
- Press MENU → Monitor LUT
- Select the desired LUT
- Activate MLUT for:
- VF (Viewfinder): Electronic viewfinder
- SDI OUT: SDI output (for external monitor/DIT)
- HDMI OUT: HDMI output
Important:
You can run different LUTs on each output simultaneously. For example: VF: s709 (for the operator) | SDI OUT: Custom show LUT (for the director/DIT) | HDMI OUT: No LUT (for an external recorder capturing raw S-Log3)
STEP 4: Configure Zebras and Waveform
With the MLUT active, zebras and the waveform measure the LUT output, not raw S-Log3. This distinction is critical.
Recommended settings:
- Zebra 1: 61% ±2% (skin tones with s709)
- Zebra 2: 77% ±2% (white card with s709)
- Waveform: Active, positioned bottom-right
