They are very useful to prevent overexposure in conditions with too much light. Besides, they allow adequate exposure using a wider lens diaphragm aperture, reducing depth of field and thus obtaining an unfocused background standing out the object or character that is in the foreground. In the same way, its use allows slower shutter speeds to produce blurred effects.
