• The use of optical filters is of high importance now that digital cinema cameras are being used, as they save time and frustration in post-production by eliminating uncertainty "on the spot", and immediately seeing the effect you want, not hours or days after any shot.

• Apart from protecting lenses from dirt, scratches and other damage that might be caused, optical correction is available to a known standard, leaving more latitude for digital effects used later.

• It is absolutely true that with today's technology there are various plug-ins that can be used in the post-production phase to electronically emulate the use of some, but not all, filters orptics. if you really want to own the final images you compose, there is no substitute. Optical filters are simply unbeatable when it comes to controlling colour balance and special effects with precision, repeatability and convenience.

• In terms of construction the best filters are those manufactured in which the filter material is permanently laminated between two pieces of clear, polished, smooth white optical glass in tolerances of one ten-thousandth of an inch, millimetrically cut to the desired proportion with diamond and then mounted on precision metal rings. They are then subjected to stringent quality control where the filter is checked by a laser interferometer, measured with a densitometer to check that the density is constant and tested for proper light transmission with a spectrophotometer. This construction uses top quality materials with high precision, ensuring that there are no chromatic deviations or different densities to those desired and keeping both colour and density perfectly uniform.
