Objectives of the Introduction to Cinematography course

  • Knowledge of the work of the director of photography, from the idea and the script to the colour grading. Relationship with the team and functions throughout the process. To teach how to develop and apply a photographic proposal.
  • Control and know how to use the fundamental principles of cinematographic directing technique with regard to the story, the camera and light. Ability to analyse the image.
  • Be able to start from the aesthetic traditions of cinema and art to develop a direction of photography for audiovisual projects. Know the tools of camera and light to carry out their work in an imaginative way.
  • Acquire fluency in photographic composition of moving images and camera staging from planning to shooting. Be aware of the expressive possibilities of the camera in its movement and framing.
  • Learn to manage and organise one's own and the team's workload. Knowing how to create a strategy for professional development and knowing the possibilities and working conditions.

Introductory course to directing photography

  • The Film course will allow the student to develop a cinematographic photography direction proposal for any audiovisual project. They will learn to read a script and translate it into images, as well as to identify the aesthetics and know how to transmit it to the director and the entire photography and filming team. They will learn their functions in each stage of the production of the audiovisual work.
  • For practical learning, students will be provided with professional camera and lighting equipment. They will learn about the fundamental resources for their work and the possibilities that these offer them with a view to creating a personal and professional aesthetic in the project.
  • They will be taught how to generate all the necessary documentation, from the script breakdown, to the technical script, camera and lighting plans, moodboards, aesthetic scripts and references for colour grading. They will learn about the software necessary to develop their work in the different phases.

Knowledge of the Introduction to Cinematography course

  • Mastery of the language of cinematographic cinematography. Knowledge of all the stages of the design, creation and completion of a project, knowing the steps and resources available to them in each of the phases.
  • You will learn how to design an aesthetic bible and how to work on planning. You will know how to manage the technical and human team under your command, as well as all the processes with the rest of the production in which you are involved in a responsible and efficient way.

  • Mastering of the digital camera and basic notions of photochemical. Knowledge of the fundamental principles of operation and the tools necessary to carry out their work.
  • Capacity for analysis and artistic knowledge of the fundamental elements that make up the image at a formal, technical and aesthetic level within its historical tradition. They will learn to recognise and work with cinematographic genres and artistic references.
  • They will master working with the camera and optics in audiovisual narrative and the staging of the sequence.
  • You will learn about your working environment, conditions and strategies for professional development.

Skills of the Introduction to Cinematography course

  • Ability to put together a coherent and consistent photographic proposal from the script with the rest of the team.
  • Ability to plan the development of this in its various stages from the idea to post-production.
  • Interpretation and creation of documents for your proposal and for the rest of the team. Creation of workflows for all the necessary pre-shooting tests (Camera, Technical Location, Photogenic, Wardrobe, sets...) and procedures.
  • They will know how to guide their camera assistant, gaffer, chief rigger and special operators on all the elements they will need to carry out their proposal. Control the processes and documentation necessary to communicate with your crew and the rest of the film.
  • Ability to carry out your tasks in an orderly manner and with leadership, as well as to control the aesthetic evolution with the joint work of the rest of the departments.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and stressful situations on set. Synchronise perfectly with the direction and production departments to carry out their work in a coherent and effective way.

Prerequisites for the Introduction to Cinematography course

Over 16 years of age. Anyone with no previous knowledge can take the course but some knowledge of photography or cinematography is recommended.
