HD MONITORS VS FULL HD MONITORS

• High definition screens are everywhere. From TVs and desktop monitors to tablet and tablet displays, high definition is the new gold standard for image resolution. X, Y and Z Series notebooks come equipped with a Full HD display to deliver unmatched picture quality, sharpness and clarity. However, it's important to understand that "high definition" can refer to picture resolutions of different sizes - this includes HD, Full HD and Ultra HD. What do these terms mean and which resolution is right for you?

WHAT IS FULL HD?

• Full HD refers to a picture resolution of 1080p. Full HD is the standard resolution for Blu-Ray, digital television and most high-definition video found on the Internet, such as YouTube, Hulu and Vimeo. Below Full HD is standard high definition or 720p: a high definition picture resolution lower than 1080p. At the higher end of the spectrum is Ultra HD (UHD or 4K). This picture resolution is higher, sharper and clearer than 1080p. However, Ultra HD picture resolution has not yet been universally adopted.
• In some cases, the term "HD" can be used interchangeably with "Full HD" to describe the picture resolution of a product. This can easily lead to confusion, as HD can also refer to standard high definition, or 720p. For clarity, you should know that HD can refer to 720p or 1080p, but Full HD can only refer to 1080p. Also, HD Ready only refers to 720p. If you are unsure of the resolution of an image based on the product description, please refer to the specifications to determine the actual image size. This is explained in more detail below.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HD READY AND FULL HD

• The term "HD Ready", when used to describe a TV or monitor, refers to a picture resolution of 720p. The term "HD" may also be used. A picture resolution of 720p contains 720 pixel lines on the vertical axis and 1280 pixel lines on the horizontal axis. Therefore, the image is 720 pixels high and 1,280 pixels wide. The result is a total of 921,600 pixels. This is the lowest image resolution considered high definition. The difference between HD Ready (or HD), Full HD and Ultra HD can be seen below:

• HD: 720p image resolution (1,280 x 720 pixels - approximately 1 million pixels in total)
• Full HD: 1080p image resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels - approximately 2 million pixels in total)
• Ultra HD: 4K image resolution (3,840 x 2,160 pixels - approximately 8 million pixels in total)

• The more pixels an image has, the better. Why? Because with more pixels, an image can be displayed at a larger size without image degradation. More pixels in a given area also allow an image to contain few or no visible pixels, known as a "retina display". In a retina display, there are more pixels in a specific area than can be seen by the human eye individually.
