ANGENIEUX - THE COMPANY 

• The Angénieux company has been designing and manufacturing lenses for cinema cameras for more than 78 years. They have defined the look of many feature films and influenced the way these projects were shot.

• Angénieux is a French manufacturer of photographic and cinematographic lenses. The main markets are cinema, television, space travel and medicine. The company is part of the Thales Group, which represents Angénieux in 48 countries. Angénieux is headquartered in Saint-Héand, France.

• Angénieux was founded in 1935 by Pierre Angénieux, the company was established in Saint-Héand, the birthplace of its founder. His original specialty was the design and manufacture of precision lenses for film and photography. Expelled from the amateur market in the 1960s, he redirected his activity towards two productions that have made him famous: spatial optics and zooms.

• From the founding of the company by Pierre Angénieux in the 1930s to the present day, Angénieux has manufactured zoom lenses of the highest quality, becoming a standard in the film and advertising industry.

• The Angénieux company supplied equipment to NASA that was used in the Ranger project, the Apollo program, the Apollo-Soyuz test project, and the space shuttle program. It is noted that the original high-resolution photos of the Moon, taken by Ranger 7, were made with a 25mm f/0.95 lens.

• In 1993, the Thales Group bought the Agénieux company and changed its name to Thales Angénieux. And today they are still dedicated to optical, electro-optical and optical-mechanical products.

PIERRE ANGENIEUX - FOUNDER OF ANGENIEUX

• Angénieux graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers in 1928 and from the École Supérieure d'Optique the following year. He was a pupil of Henri Chrétien. 

  He worked for Pathé and in 1935 Angénieux founded a company specialising in cinema called Les Etablissements Pierre Angénieux.

• He began to use geometrical optics for physical optics in the design of his lenses, like Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe, and developed a method that reduced the time taken to design an optic by an order of magnitude.

• It was in the 1960s that Angénieux reached his peak, in collaboration with NASA in the conquest of space and within the film industry.

• In 64, Pierre Angénieux won the technical prize "for the development of a ten-to-one zoom lens for cinema". He also received the Grand Prix des Ingénieurs Civils in France in 1973, and the Gordon E. Sawyer Award in 1989. His company also manufactured lenses for the Kodak Retinette and Pony cameras.

ANGENIEUX -  CINEMA ZOOM LENSES CONTRIBUTIONS

• The Thales Angénieux company has been a world reference for the creation of cinematographic lenses for almost 80 years.

• In 1950, Angénieux introduced the Angénieux retrofocus, which allowed wide-angle lenses to be mounted on single-lens reflex cameras.

• In 1953, Angénieux designed the fastest lens of the day, reaching f/0.95. The design was used in the Bell & Howell 70 series cameras for 35 years.

• In 1956 Angénieux designed a 17-68mm constant aperture lens and a 12-120mm zoom lens in 1958.

• With four awards in Hollywood (1964, 1989, 2008) from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and one in 2012 from the Society of Camera Operators, the Thales Angenieux company is considered essential in high-level filming and production. Some good examples where the company worked are: Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave, which won the Oscar for best film, Martin Scorcese's The Wolf of Wall Street or Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmaster.

• Starting in 2013, the Thales Angénieux company prepares the Pierre Angénieux Excellens in Cinematography event every year at the Cannes Festival to commemorate a relevant Director of Photography for his career.

• The telephoto lenses of the company Thales Angénieux are of such quality that they are also used to shoot in 3D, for example they have been used in films such as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug...

The optic has a new optical and mechanical design, so it has been created to offer improved optical performance, mechanical stability and serviceability.

Rental Angenieux Optimo 24-290mm T2.8 Zoom

• This zoom lens for rent is distinguished by its luminosity with T2.8 constant diaphragm throughout its entire travel. It weighs 11kg, has a focal range that covers from 24mm to 290mm (12x). It is considered a high performance zoom lens for full frame cameras. The objective gives a great image quality, with a considerable focal range thanks to its design.

• The Angénieux Optimo Dp 25-250mm T3.5 zoom lens for rent began on the market in the 1990s. It is a robustly manufactured lens with a wide focal range (10x). • It began to be marketed in the 90s. The Angénieux HR 25-250 T3.5 zoom for rent is the second generation of Angenieux lenses that has this focal range. We are talking about an improvement of the Angénieux 25-250 HP T3.7 zoom that was based on reducing the T number of the diaphragm, making a stronger body and improving the mechanics of the zoom system. This lens is the origin of what we currently know as the Angénieux Optimo Style 25-250mm T3.5 zoom that we offer for rent.

Rental Angénieux Optimo 45-120mm T2.8

• It is a very light weight optic. It is a lens that we have for rent, which is one of the most used in the film industry, since it combines agility and quality very well. The angle of view at the widest focal length is 45°, which is very similar to that of a 35mm still camera. At the longest focal length, it's a relatively tight 13.8°. This Optimo DP lens uses Angénieux's exclusive XD-Optics technology, which is designed to minimize sphericity.

• The Angénieux Optimo Style 16-40mm T2.8 zoom for rent corresponds to the Style models. It is modeled after the Angénieux Optimo Digital Production (DP) series of zooms with a 2.5x zoom range.

• The Angénieux Optimo 15-40mm T2.6 zoom lens for rent is in the new category of lightweight zooms from Angénieux, one of the best brands in the film industry. It covers Super 35mm sensors (31.4mm diagonal) and is homogeneous in colour, contrast and sharpness. It covers a focal range of 15mm to 40mm (2.7x) with a constant T2.6 aperture throughout its entire travel. This zoom is ASU servo compatible and covers S35mm sensors (35mm when using one of their Optimo duplicators).

The Angénieux EZ-2 15-40mm T2 rental lens has a focal range and aperture that is set at 22-60mm F2.8/T3 for the FF/VV covering an image up to 46mm and 15-40mm F1.9/T2 for the S35 covering a sensor image up to 30mm. By swapping the rear lens group, the optics can be changed from FF/VV to S35 to S35.

• The Angénieux Optimo Style 30-76mm T2.8 zoom for rent corresponds to the Style category. It is modeled after the Angénieux Optimo Digital Production (DP) series of zooms with a 2.5x zoom range. • Angénieux extenders are uniquely designed for Optimo zoom lenses to maintain their image quality reproduction while extending their focal ranges. They offer a good solution for increasing the focal range of all lenses while maintaining high image quality throughout the entire zoom range, with only one or two T-stops lost at wide open. They can be used as a "Format Adapter" to cover cameras with large sensors.

• The Angénieux 2x Extender rental lenses are compatible with all Optimo and Optimo Style lenses but would be totally incompatible with previous Optimo DP lenses.

Rental Angénieux 30-72mm T4 A2S

• It is an anamorphic zoom. Angénieux has created 2 anamorphic zooms, the 30-72mm for rent, it is the widest and together with the Angénieux 56-152mm T4 that we also have for rent, they make up the A2S series. This optic is designed in such a way that the anamorphic component is located at the rear of the optic. This objective covers 28.8mm image circles. The focus ring has a 320º rotation, it has two scales to choose from; the metric (m) or imperial (ft) scale and has a 0.8mm toothing.

Rental Angénieux 56-152mm T4 A2S

• It was the first anamorphic zoom created by Angénieux. The Angénieux 56-152mm for rent is a lens launched in 2013 and has a new model of compact and lightweight anamorphic zooms. It has a 2.7x focal range with a T4 aperture throughout. 4.4 T4 maximum aperture with an angular field of 56º to 39º, in addition, it has a high resolution quality, easy to handle, spherical lens, light objective with excellent performance.

Rental Angénieux Optimo 17-80mm T2.2

• This Optimo 17-88mm T2.2 rental lens was released in 2004. It has a weight of 5.5Kg, a front diameter of 136mm, a close focus of 0.6m and a PL mount. This optic was used by Woody Allen in 2011 in his movie Midnight in Paris.
