ARRI - THE COMPANY

  • Arri was founded in 1917 in a store on Tuerkenstrasse street in Munich, by two aspirants to PDO August Arnold and Robert Richter, in fact the name of the brand is from their last names, with the AR of August Arnold and with the RI of Robert Richter.
  • Their first products were film lighting and printing machines, although later they worked on everything related to the world of cinema, film production, camera manufacturing, lenses, lights...
  • Arri began a path in the film world of eclectic invention to support entertainment-turned-big business conceived in a nimble and mobile European style of production. They started working on two German westerns "Vengeance in the Valley of Gold" and "Deadly Cowboy". In 1924, they made what was their initial camera, the KinArri 35.
  • With the advent of World War II, the DOP began to document this historical event, and the Germans did so with Arriflex 35 cameras. After the war in the US, he became known thanks to his hand shots and documentaries. In 1968 it was when ARRI began to expand in Hollywood. In 1983 ARRI expanded to Great Britain, and was called ARRI GB whose directors were Derrick Ross and Paul Wild.
  • While in Austria Fritz Gabriel Bauer created another company called Moviecam, which was also dedicated to the manufacture of cameras. Arri bought that company in the 1990s, and in 2000 released the Arricam ST and Arricam LT cameras. The ST was Arri's first silent 35mm camera with slide magazines, it was also the last one they released with these features.
  • In October 2012 the son of August Arnold sold 50% of his shares to the heirs of Robert Richter who now own 100% of the Arri company.

AUGUST ARNOLD AND ROBERT RITCHER - THE FOUNDERS OF ARRI

  • Arri was founded in 1917 in a store on Tuerkenstrasse street in Munich, by two aspirants to PDO August Arnold and Robert Richter, in fact the name of the brand is from their last names, with the AR of August Arnold and with the RI of Robert Richter.
  • Robert Richter traveled to the US in 1925, sold ARRI equipment and worked as a camera assistant at Universal. And it was there that he saw that Hollywood was working with bigger and heavier cameras and this influenced later ARRI designs. He then returned to Munich where he entered the Munich University of Technology and earned an engineering degree.

ARRI - CINEMA'S CONTRIBUTIONS

  • In '24, Arri first made its tungsten electric light fixtures with faceted mirror reflectors. Similar multi-segment mirror technology appeared in 2006, in the Arrimax 18/12, the "world's best quality HMI PAR light", and in subsequent M-series luminaires.
  • In 1928 they made the KinArri Model II Tropic, with an adjustable rotary shutter and daylight film magazine. They were intended for the 35mm trade. But Richter believed that 16mm would be best for amateur films, and the KINARRI 16 was next.
  • In 1937 at the Leipzig Fair, they presented the Arriflex 35 which had a WYSIWYG image: what you saw on the ground glass was identical to the image captured on film and capable of showing whether the shot was in focus or not. Erich Kaestner, who joined ARRI at age 21 in 1933, was the chief design engineer for this light, small and strong camera.
  • In 1941 it was when Arri made his first great contribution to cinema with the Arriflex 35II, the camera used a rotating mirror that allowed the camera operator to have a view without parallax while a motor pushed the camera, while being able to focus the image. looking through a viewfinder similar to an SLR camera. This is still used today in movie cameras.
  • Television news and documentaries were increasingly shot on 16mm. The Arriflex 16ST came out in 1950, inspired by the rotating mirror shutter of the Model 35 II. 100 foot spools that could be loaded in daylight were needed. In 1965, 16BL came out for industrial films and documentaries with synchronized sound in 16mm. It was ARRI's first silent camera.
  • In 1952 he released his professional 16mm camera the Arriflex 16ST with an automatic viewfinder and based on the 35II camera, that is to say with a similar concept in the rotating mirror shutter and with reels that could be loaded in daylight.
  • In 1966 Tonino Delli Colli AIC filmed "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" starring Clint Eastwood with a 2-hole Techniscope 35 IICT/B camera, it used half as much film as the 4-hole anamorphic, which helped to reduce costs. Thousands of cameras of this model were sold until the new Arriflex III model came out in 1979.
  • In the year 1969, the DOP László Kovács filmed "Easy Rider" with the Arriflex 35 IIC, which was the third highest grossing film in the world and which only with a budget of 360 thousand dollars earned 60 million.
  • In 1972 Arri presented at the Munich Olympic Games a silent production 35mm camera, the Arriflex 35BL. It was a comfortable camera to wear on the shoulder. It required a goggled blimp for silence, but it was light, small, and portable. It had the ability to toggle between synchronized sound and it could also be used for slow motion for its 100 fps.
  • The Arriflex 535 was not very well received as it was too big and heavy, although DOP Vittorio Storaro used it to film the movie "Little Buddha". Even so, in 1993 they released the ARRI 535BL, which was much lighter.
  • In 1994 they released the Arriflex 435 camera as a high-speed 35mm MOS camera to replace the 35 III. It had a speed of up to 150 fps. ARRI's digital age began in 1995 and in 1998 they released the ARRILASER, a cost-reducing digital film recorder. It had the ability to record in 4K resolution.
  • In 2003 ARRI released the Arriflex 235 model, a very elegant design that could be used both in the hand, as stabilizers, on platforms and also underwater. A year later, it released the ARRISCAN scanner with a resolution of up to 6K. With this new product, films could be filmed and digitized to data files in real time, which greatly lowered the cost.
  • In November 2005 Arri introduced its Arriflex D-20 camera, which was its first digital cinema camera. At the 2006 NAB fair, ARRI unveiled the Arriflex 416 model, Arri's latest analog camera.
  • Three years after the Arriflex D-20 came on the market, Arri released the Arriflex D-21 which was more of a design for television than for cinema.
  • In 2009, Arri presented its Alexa models in Amsterdam, which began to be manufactured in 2010. The exposure range and the dynamic range were similar. It features modularity and PL mount, Super 35 size CMOS sensor that captures up to 3424 × 2202 resolution and supports uncompressed video.
  • Roger Alexander Deakins British DOP of films like "Fargo" and "Blade Runner 2049" (for which he won his first Oscar) said: "This camera has brought us to a point where digital is just better."
  • The controls were already familiar and it fully met the expectations of the move from film to digital. The Alexa was the most used camera in the world in the filming of the year 2017.
  • Arri's most successful luminaire came out in 2015 under the name of Skypanel. It was a line of soft LED lights brighter than tungsten and totally cool to the touch of the hands. This type of light entered the market as successfully as Alexa cameras.
