FRANK WANG - DJI FOUNDER

  • Frank Wang is a Chinese aerospace engineer and entrepreneur, who moved to Hong Kong in 2003 after enrolling in an undergraduate programme at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). In 2005, the university awarded Wang funding of HK$18,000 (equivalent to US$2,300) to conduct research and develop a drone. From his dorm room at HKUST, Wang established the company in 2006.

DIJI - CINEMA'S CONTRIBUTIONS

  • The Ronin, also known as the "Ronin 1" and introduced on 25 June 2014, marked DJI's first foray into the digitally stabilised camera gimbals market. This version had a maximum load capacity of 16lbs, making it compatible with the most robust DSLR and cinema cameras of the time.
  • DJI's Ronin M achieved a significant reduction in overall weight and dimensions compared to the original Ronin 1 while maintaining a similar package. This new model featured an improved 1580mAh battery, while maintaining compatibility with the larger capacity battery used in the Ronin 1.
  • The Ronin MX was introduced as an action gimbal designed to withstand more intense G-forces and for aerial video recording, incorporating more powerful motors compared to the M model. When used conventionally, this model has a slightly higher payload capacity of 10lbs compared to the M. However, this payload capacity is reduced to 8.49lbs when used in conjunction with DJI's M600 hexacopter.
  • DJI's Ronin 2 stands out as the most robust member of the Ronin series, specifically designed for cinema applications. This model features a distinctive design by employing a monopod halo ring instead of traditional handles, providing a variety of grip options and multiple mounting points.
  • The Ronin S marked a milestone as the first model in the Ronin series to adopt the one-handed format. With its introduction, the S introduced ergonomics that would eventually become a common feature across the Ronin line. In September 2019, through a firmware update, the Ronin S acquired DJI's Force Mobile and ActiveTrack 3.0 features. This gave it the ability to automatically track selected facial features through the use of a smartphone camera connected via the app.
  • DJI's Ronin SC model is a compact version of the Ronin S, designed specifically for lighter mirrorless cameras. Although the SC has a smaller battery and charging capacity than the S, it shares similar ergonomics. The SC received firmware support from the S.
  • The Ronin RS 2 model is the pioneer in the DJI Ronin series by incorporating an integrated touchscreen and focus wheel. With the addition of DJI's optional RavenEye system, it features the additional ability to perform ActiveTrack directly from its LCD screen.
  • The Ronin RSC 2 is a budget version of the RS 2, sharing many features. Like its predecessor, it is specially designed for mirrorless cameras. Unlike the RS 2, it requires an external phone to use the ActiveTrack function. In addition, it has a built-in battery in a non-interchangeable grip.
  • The Ronin 4D distinguishes itself as the first fully integrated cinema camera in the Ronin series. Its design fuses DJI's gimbal technology into a camera body with an isoelastic Z-axis arm. In addition, the 4D introduced DJI's optional LiDAR radar system, enabling on-screen object focusing and tracking. The 6K version began production in February 2022. In March 2023, an additional accessory for the 4D, the Ronin 4D Flex, was introduced. The Flex allows the 4D lens and gimbal to be removed from the main camera body and reconnected via a 2-metre long flexible cable, providing better access in tight places.
