SONY - THE COMPANY

  • In 1960, they moved to the United States of America and launched their first portable televisions, which were very light. In 1966 they opened a building in the most elite area of Tokyo, Ginza. In 1970 Sony became the first Japanese company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In the same year, they joined forces with the American company CBS, which also had offices in Japan, and renamed themselves CBS/Sony Records Inc.
  • In 1988 they bought CBS Records Inc. and in the same year changed its name to Sony Music Entertainment Inc. In the same year they bought the American company Columbia Pictures Entertainment Inc. and changed its name to Sony Pictures Entertainment. In 1996 they founded Sony Communication Network Corporation and created S-net, a Japanese internet service provider. In 1998 they set up a Sony finance company, which they called Sony Assurance in 1999.
  • In 2001 they established their own bank, Sony Bank Inc. In 2004 they founded Sony Financial Holdings Inc., a Japanese holding company for the financial services business, and in 2007 this company was listed on the Japanese stock exchange. And it has not stopped launching different technology-related companies up to the present day.

MASARU IBUKA - SONY FOUNDER

  • Born in 1908 in Japan. He was nicknamed the great inventor at Waneda University where he graduated in 1933. He then started working in a film processing company. During the Second World War he started to manufacture military equipment.
  • After the war it occurred to him that Japan needed a big technology company, and that is when he started his company. He died in 1997 after creating one of the world's leading technology and electronics companies.

SONY - CINEMA'S CONTRIBUTIONS

  • In 1982 they released the BVW-1 model, which was a 1/2-inch integrated Betacam camera/VTR that was made for professional analogue-based broadcast use. In 1994 they brought out the DVW-700 model, also an integrated Betacam camera that was made especially for professional broadcast use. In 1997 they revolutionised the camera world with their HDW-700 model as it was the first camera capable of recording in HD.
  • In 2000 they introduced the HDW-900 camera, which was developed to meet the demands of Hollywood at the time. In the same year they also released the MSW-200 which was capable of storing video data up to 50mbs. In 2008 Sony manufactured and released the back-illuminated CMOS image sensor that is used in most of the world's film cameras.
  • The year 2012 was a big year for Sony in the world of cinema as they released several highly praised camera models such as the FS65 camera which comes with a single-chip 8K CMOS image sensor with 20 megapixels. This camera was a total revolution as it gave the highest image resolution in the film industry. The camera model PMW - F55 and the HXR-NX3D1J were also released.
  • In 2014, the PXW-FS7 interchangeable lens XDCAM™ memory camera model equipped with a Super 35mm 4K CMOS image sensor was released. And 2018 saw the release of its most acclaimed camera to date, the Venice model and recently the Sony Venice 2, which we have for rent at Chameleon.
