ZEISS - THE COMPANY

  • It is a company that is in charge of manufacturing optical equipment, industrial meters and a manufacturer of optical equipment, industrial meters and medical instruments. It was founded in Jena, Germany, in 1846 by optician Carl Zeiss and in 1847 it began manufacturing microscopes. In 1861 this company was considered the best factory for scientific tools in Germany, it had about 20 employees, but the company was growing very fast. In 1866 the physicist Ernst Abbe joined and in 1884 Otto Schott and together they created the bases for the production of modern optics.
  • During World War I, Zeiss was the world's largest camera production factory. In 1928, Carl Zeiss acquired the company Hensoldt AG and they have been manufacturing Zeiss binoculars and riflescopes since 1965, which is why there are identical products under both the Hesoldt and Zeiss brands.
  • At the end of World War II, Jena was incorporated into the Soviet occupation zone (GDR) in 1949. Before this happened, the US Army relocated the factory to Stuttgart, although part of it remained in the German Democratic Republic and the Soviet Union established the Kiev camera company. Zeiss products from the Federal Republic of Germany were called Opton for sales in the eastern area, while Zeiss products from the GDR were called Zeiss Jena or Jena for sales in western countries.
  • In 1973, Carl Zeiss made an agreement with the Japanese camera company Yashica to manufacture high-quality 35mm film cameras and optics. This collaboration continued until 2005. Zeiss also manufactured optics for the space industry. Zeiss Jena (GDR) was also known for its high-quality products.
  • In 1990, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the German unification, Zeiss Jena was considered an East German company capable of competing globally and became Jenoptik Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH. In 1991, Jenoptik Carl Zeiss Jena was split, with Carl Zeiss AG (Oberkochen) taking over the company's divisions for microscopy and other precision lenses and Jenoptik GmbH as a specialist company for photonics, optoelectronics and mechatronics.
  • Today, there are three companies with mainly Zeiss heritage: Zeiss Germany, the Finnish/Swedish Ikon (which bought West Germany's Zeiss Ikon AG) and the independent Zeiss Ikon Orie. They are considered the world's leading company in the development and production of high-performance camera lenses for all areas of photography and cinematography.

    CARL ZEISS - ZEISS FOUNDER

    • He was born in Weimar (Germany) in the year 1816 and died in Jane in the year 1888 at the age of 72. Carl had an ailment that prevented him from making physical efforts and so his father enrolled him in a special gym in Weimar. There he dealt with an environment of technicians and scientists who awakened his interest in continuing at the University with his studies in Mechanics.
    • Carl in 1834 went to Jena and was a student of Professor Dr. Friedrich Körner (1778-1847). At that time he already denoted his ability for lenses, he became one of the best opticians in Germany from a young age. Zeiss remained in Jena until he finished his scientific training... It was when steam engines were established in locomotives and this attracted him, prompting him to practice on this subject.
    • In 1840 he was already known for his manufacture of large aperture lenses that allowed sharp images. The first optics that he manufactured began to be used in microscopes.
    • After several years, Carl decides to return to Jena and consecrate himself as an optical mechanic. In order to be accepted, he enters the University of Jena in November 1845 to be able to take math and chemistry classes.

    ZEISS - CINEMA'S CONTRIBUTIONS

    • Zeiss camera lenses have won three Academy Awards in the Science and Engineering category. In 1987, 1999 and 2012.
    • The Zeiss lens house has manufactured optics used in many feature films since its foundation. Lenses from the 1970s and 1980s such as the Zeiss Super Speed T1.3 MkI, Zeiss Super Speed MKII & MKIII T1.3 and Zeiss Standard Primes T2.1. These types of lenses are used today. In combination with the new Digital Cinema sensors they offer optimal results.
    • The Zeiss Super Speed T1.4 MKI lenses were the first to be manufactured, in the mid-1970s. Their high luminosity and overall performance marked a before and after in cinematography. Another of its most particular characteristics is the triangular diaphragm, only notable with more closed diaphragms than T2.8.
    • Zeiss Standard Prime T2.1 lenses were released in 1983, designed for the House of Arriflex and their 35mm cameras. These opticians have a minimal antiflare coating, which is why they tend to produce flashes, even blurring the image. Its optical performance is perfect in T2.8 diaphragms, below this they lose definition and contrast.
    • The Zeiss Super Speed T1.3 MKI & MKII Lens Sets are the predecessor series of the Zeiss Master Prime T1.3. Its best optical result is obtained in more closed diaphragms of T2.8 offering great sharpness. The Zeiss Super Speed MKII T1.3 version improves the focus marks, they are larger and available on both sides of the lens.
    • Currently, his Games of spherical and Anamorphic lenses continue to be one of the first options in fiction series, feature films and Advertising.
