Customer ratings and reviews
The RED Epic Dragon features the Red DRAGON CMOS sensor, with 6K resolution and 19.4mpxl (6144 x 3160) in a Super35 size (34.5mm diagonal, 30.7mm wide x 15.8mm height). It has been designed to reach ultra high resolutions with an incredible dynamic range with 16.5 stops. Besides, it is able to shoot in different formats (2:1, 2.4:1@6K RAW, Full Frame and anamorphic@5K RAW) and several framerates including HFR 300fps@2K
The default format is REDCODE RAW, the native RED cameras file format. This format maximizes the posproduction possibilities via storing each sensor’s color channel separately. This format can be set to have a compression ratio that varies from 2:1 to 22:1. Apart from this, the camera can shoot in a wide variety of formats, supporting anamorphic and 12 to 16bits RAW.
Regarding the playback framerates, the camera allows for 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 47.98, 50, 59.94 and 60fps with any resolution.
This camera is designed to reach high transfer data rates due to the RED Mini-Mag cards, which support up to 200mb/s. The Mini-Mag cards range between 480Gb and 960Gb
Color, sound, monitoring and remote control
The RED Epic Dragon is able to manage 3D LUTs and HDR live using the Redcast module, which provides with direct processed signal transmission allowing for either live monitoring while shooting or broadcast productions.
The camera does also feature 2 24bit/48Khz audio channels with no compression. There is the option of setting 4 not compressed channels via the AES3 or AES/EBU interface.
The remote control can be set via the REDLINK using the REDMOTE and the RED COMMAND PROTOCOL. An ethernet data transmission conexion can be also used in order to remotely control the camera.
The camera offers a wide range of monitoring options thanks to its capability of using DSMC2 modules which add the required input and output connections when needed. Among the different connection docks we can find power supply pins (DC IN), HDMI, 3G-SDI (HD-SDI), CTRL, Genlock and timecode ports. Besides, a minijack port is located in the back of the camera.
Among the monitoring options the camera offer we can find the RED Touch 4.7" LCD, RED Touch 9.0", RED Tocuh 5.0", RED PRO 7.0" o RED Touch 7.0" (all of them compatible with the Lemo DSMC2 conection provided by the camera); we can also spot LCD/EVF outputs
RED does always recommend the REDCINE X-PRO software when working with R3D (Redcode Raw) files. This pack includes a series of softwares created to transcode and edit the clips recorded in R3D format. The software not only allows for image editing, but also allows for rescaling and color grading without loss, preserving the RAW file untouched.
