Innovation in stabilization, Full Frame 8.6K sensor and sustainable design

The Sony Burano is the first digital cinema camera with PL mount to incorporate in-body image stabilization (IBIS) for almost any attached lens, including PL lenses for the first time. This system comes from Sony's Alpha™ series, with a gyroscopic sensor and an advanced control algorithm that effectively corrects camera vibrations in handheld or moving shooting, reducing the need for additional equipment in many applications.

Equipped with a Full Frame 8.6K sensor, the Burano shares key specifications with the Venice 2, including 16 stops of latitude and dual base ISO 800 and 3200. It allows working in both Full Frame and Super 35, using anamorphic lenses and capturing images in resolutions up to 8K, maintaining very low noise and great detail in highlights and shadows.

Its variable electronic neutral density filter, adjustable from approximately 0.6 to 2.1, offers very precise control of exposure and depth of field, adapting the camera to different lighting conditions without compromising image quality.

The Sony Burano is also compact and lightweight, being 32 mm shorter and 1.4 kg lighter than the Venice 2. Sony has designed this camera with a focus on sustainability, reducing the use of plastics in packaging and using materials such as plant cellulose, contributing to a lower environmental impact.

Versatility with PL mount and E mount: more than 70 compatible lenses

The Sony Burano integrates as standard a PL lens mount compatible with Super 35 mm and full-frame PL lenses, both spherical and anamorphic. The mount contacts support Cooke/i technology, allowing lens information to be recorded as metadata frame by frame.

By removing the PL adapter, the E mount with lever lock can be used. This mount allows changing lenses simply by rotating the locking collar, without the need to disassemble lens supports, saving time on set. The Burano is compatible with more than 70 E-mount lenses, from ultra wide-angle to telephoto, and takes advantage of advanced image stabilization and fast hybrid autofocus (phase detection + contrast) with AI subject recognition, ideal for moving subjects.

The use of E‑mount lenses also contributes to reducing the size and weight of the camera‑lens assembly, improving handling and the cinematic experience with the Burano, especially in mobile or single-operator projects.

Improved ergonomic design for operators and small crews

The design of the Sony Burano has been refined from feedback from professional filmmakers. The menu buttons have been reorganized on the operator's side for more intuitive access during recording, and tally lamps have been added in three different positions to easily verify recording status from different angles.

The camera includes a 3.5" multifunctional LCD screen that acts as both a monitor and touch interface for focus control and menu navigation, increasing agility on set. It is complemented by an optional T-grip, viewfinder arm, two 3-pin XLR inputs and headphone output, facilitating solo filming with all essential tools at hand.

Flexible recording formats and CFexpress Type B cards

The Sony Burano is extremely versatile in terms of recording, capable of capturing from HD to 8K depending on resolution, aspect ratio and selected codec. It incorporates the new XAVC H™, ideal for 8K, which uses the MPEG‑H HEVC/H.265 codec for high compression with excellent quality.

It also supports XAVC and X‑OCN LT, the latter a compressed RAW format that offers great flexibility in color grading and optimizes workflow by reducing transfer times and storage space. The two CFexpress Type B card slots allow efficient data handling, are compatible with VPG400 and are ready for X‑OCN LT 8K streams. Sony has announced new CFexpress Type B cards specifically designed for professional cinema demands.

16 stops of latitude, wide color gamut and new picture styles

With 16 stops of latitude, the Sony Burano camera captures images with a minimal noise level even in high-contrast situations, maintaining detail in highlight and shadow areas. This provides operators with great flexibility in color grading and allows delivery of content for SDR, HDR and high-end digital cinema.

The Burano incorporates the extensive S‑Gamut / S‑Gamut.Cine color space, just like the Venice 2, covering a range that exceeds BT.2020 and DCI‑P3 standards. Recording options in S‑Log3 and X‑OCN greatly expand creative possibilities in post-production, and since the Burano maintains the same color accuracy as the Venice 2, combined use of both cameras allows a smooth post-production workflow.

It shares Venice 2's dual base ISO philosophy, with ISO 800 and 3200, which guarantees clean images with low noise in both well-lit environments (ISO 800) and low-light situations (ISO 3200), allowing excellent results even in scenes lit only by candles.

The Burano also incorporates four new picture styles (Warm, Cool, Vintage and Teal and Orange) that add to the existing s709 and 709(800) in Cine EI mode. These styles have been designed for common shooting situations, allowing quick selection of a distinctive look with a single button. LUT data applied during recording can be saved in clip metadata, simplifying color workflow.

Anamorphic function, Cinema Line ecosystem and Monitor & Control

The Sony Burano includes as standard an anamorphic lens desqueeze function. The monitoring menu allows selection of desqueeze factors of 1.3x, 1.5x* or 2.0x, displaying the corrected image on both the camera's LCD screen and external FHD monitors via SDI or HDMI outputs.

It is part of a broad production ecosystem within the Sony Cinema Line, which includes models such as Venice, Venice 2, Burano, FX9, FX6, FX3 and the PTZ FR7. This line is characterized by offering a refined cinematic look, high reliability and continuous operability improvements, meeting the needs of the most demanding creators.
