Main Features Sony Burano
BURANO, with the highly regarded colour science inherited from the VENICE cameras, features an 8.6K Full Frame sensor that shares most of the specifications of the VENICE 2. This integration enables seamless collaboration on a variety of film productions. The sensor offers a dual basic ISO of 800 and 3200, along with an impressive 16-stop latitude², ensuring stunning images even in challenging lighting conditions.
Following in the tradition of Sony's Cinema Line Full Frame cameras, BURANO has the versatility to switch between Super 35 and Full Frame. In addition, it inherits the decompression capability for anamorphic lenses, offering resolutions up to 8K at 30 fps, 6K at 60 fps or 4K at 120 fps.
With a compact and lightweight design, the BURANO body is approximately 32mm shorter and 1.4kg lighter than the VENICE 2 camera, providing exceptional mobility. Its rugged magnesium chassis gives it the toughness needed to shoot in the most challenging environments. As part of Sony's efforts to be environmentally friendly, the case and camera and accessory bags are made primarily from vegetable cellulose³ rather than plastic. In addition, the camera incorporates a moulded cellulose cushion as a cushioning material, eliminating the use of expanded polystyrene.
Integrated optical image stabilisation Sony Burano
BURANO marks a milestone by becoming the world's first PL-mount digital cinema camera to support in-body image stabilisation. This breakthrough is achieved thanks to a newly developed image stabilisation mechanism and control algorithm that leverages the advanced image stabilisation technology of the Alpha™ series of interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras.
This innovative system effectively corrects unwanted camera shake, whether when shooting handheld or while moving during shooting. This function is compatible with both E-mount and PL-mount lenses, offering exceptional versatility to suit a variety of creative situations.
With BURANO, experience state-of-the-art image stabilisation, taking cinematography to new heights and providing the flexibility to capture smooth images in any environment.
Variable Neutral Density Filter for increased control and exposure optimisation
BURANO features an electronic variable neutral density filter, with settings ranging from 0.6 to 2.1. This filter provides the flexibility to easily adapt to various lighting environments, allowing precise control over exposure. In addition, the filter's adjustability is not only limited to exposure, but also provides efficient control over depth of field via the iris.
This unique BURANO feature allows filmmakers to achieve the optimum exposure without compromising the desired depth of field. Experience total control over your visual creativity with the fine-tuning capability offered by this electronic variable neutral density filter.
E-mount lenses for greater variety Sony Burano
With over 70 E-mount lenses available, the BURANO offers exceptional versatility for cinematographers. These lenses can take advantage of the outstanding image stabilisation function developed in collaboration with the Alpha™ series, delivering sharp, steady images. In addition, fast hybrid autofocus, which combines the advantages of phase and contrast detection methods, ensures fast and accurate focusing.
Support for Artificial Intelligence (AI) subject recognition autofocus adds another layer of precision to image capture. Beyond functionality, the use of E-mount lenses not only improves performance, but also contributes to reducing the weight and size of the camera, optimising the BURANO's cinematic experience.
Improved body design for better ergonomics
Sony BURANO has been improved in its design taking into account valuable feedback from the filmmaking community. Responding to their needs, all menu buttons have been strategically placed on the operator side of the camera. In addition, Tally lamps have been incorporated in three locations to make it easier for surrounding personnel to check the status of the recording.
The 3.5-inch multi-function LCD screen not only serves as a monitor, but can also be used as a viewfinder for touch focus or menu management, providing additional versatility. For added convenience, the BURANO comes equipped with an optional sturdy T-grip, a viewfinder arm, two 3-pin XLR audio inputs and a headphone terminal (stereo mini jack), making it easy to work alone with all the necessary tools at your fingertips.
Recording formats for increased workflow flexibility Sony Burano
The versatility of the BURANO camera is reflected in its recording capability, ranging from HD to 8K, depending on resolution, aspect ratio and selected codec. Among the various internal recording formats supported is the new XAVC H™ for 8K, which uses the highly compressible MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec.
In addition to XAVC H, BURANO offers support for other recording formats such as XAVC and X-OCN LT. X-OCN, Sony's unique compressed RAW format, captures information with 16-bit linear data, giving filmmakers greater freedom in post-production for colour grading. In addition, X-OCN LT optimises post-production workflows by reducing file transfer time and storage overhead compared to standard versions of RAW data.
The two new CFexpress B-type memory card slots in the BURANO allow for greater flexibility in data handling. VPG400 compatibility ensures high bit rate writing of video data, including X-OCN LT 8K. To complement these capabilities, Sony will launch new B-type CFexpress memory cards, such as CEB-G1920T (1920GB) and CEB-G960T (960GB), in spring 2024 to meet the storage and performance demands of professional cinematographers.
Versatile and efficient production ecosystem Sony Burano
BURANO stands out for its support for various log recording modes, such as S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut.Cine, which cover colour ranges beyond BT.2020 and DCI-P3. This ensures faithful colour reproduction, aligning with the capabilities of other cameras in Sony's Cinema line-up, including the VENICE 2. Filmmakers have the flexibility to combine cameras from the same line-up, facilitating visual consistency in their productions. In addition, BURANO includes genlock for precise synchronisation.
The camera features four new cinematic looks⁴: warm, cool, retro and teal and orange, along with support for industry-standard s709 and 709 (800%) reference tables (LUTs).
Like the VENICE series, BURANO is suitable for virtual production with large LED monitors such as Sony's Crystal LED VERONA.
Cinema Line's continuous improvement in both hardware and software Sony Burano
Cinema Line represents a series of camera products dedicated to content creators, offering not only the coveted cinematic look refined over extensive experience in digital cinema production, but also improvements in operability and reliability that meet the diverse needs of the most demanding creators. Constantly evolving, the Cinema Line currently includes the high-end VENICE, VENICE 2 and BURANO cameras within the CineAlta series, as well as the various FX models and the unique FR7 PTZ camera.
On the software side, the newly launched Monitor & Control⁷ mobile app, integrated into Sony Creators' Cloud, is compatible with the FX3 and FX30, among other models. Designed with visual creators in mind, the app facilitates wireless video monitoring, assists in accurately determining exposure using waveform and false colour monitors, and simplifies focus control of compatible cameras via a smartphone or tablet screen. BURANO is also expected to support this application in the future.
